Volunteer Opportunities

There are many ways to be involved with the Advocacy & Resource Center.

Crisis Line Volunteer

Job DescriptionOn call domestic violence, sexual assault, violent crime crisis line responder.

Responsibilities: (1) be available to answer calls during hours that the Center is closed, (2) meet with victims when appropriate, (3) arrange shelter, food, and transportation, (4) meet ongoing training requirements.

Qualifications: Work alone, track hours, maintain confidentiality.

Time Commitment1 to 7 on call shifts a month (Mon-Fri, 5 p.m.-8 a.m.), ongoing training meeting each month.

Training: Complete 40 hrs of training (required by the state of Wyoming).

Cell Phone Volunteer

Job Description: Maintain donated cell phones that are given to victims for emergency use.

Responsibilities: (1) sort and clean cell phones, (2) charge cell phones, (3) delete the memories that may still be on the cell phones, (4) maintain charging log, (5) dispose of unusable phones (mail to recycling center).

Qualifications: Desire to help, knowledge of cell phones useful.

Time Commitment: Very flexible, volunteer can choose best time for them during Center office hours, M – F, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.

Training: 2 hours to include: confidentiality, victim issues, and Center services.

Child Care Volunteer

Job Description:  Child care for victims      attending support groups. Victims can use the information and connections from support groups to change their lives, but often cannot attend because they don’t have the resources for child care or child care is not available. Child care volunteers make the opportunity for major changes possible.

Responsibilities: (1) interact with children in a variety of age groups (2) listen and observe in an open, supportive way, (3) play, read and watch children’s movies, (4) debrief with staff.

Qualifications: Ability to interact with children in a safe, supportive fashion, desire to be involved with children’s play, must pass background check.

Time Commitment: Dependent on group times (estimate: 4 – 6 hours a month).

Training:  3 hours to include: confidentiality, victim issues, and Center services.

Volunteer Group Co-facilitator

Job Description: The Center prefers to have two facilitators for a support group. This    allows co-facilitators to have some flexibility if one cannot be in group. It also brings more support and creativity to the group.

Responsibilities:  (1) listen and observe in an open, supportive way, (2) give information and options without judgment, (3) strong commitment to attend group sessions, (4) meet each week before and after group to debrief and plan group sessions with the co-facilitator.

Qualifications: Ability to interact in a supportive non-judgmental fashion, knowledge of group dynamicswould be very useful, must pass background check.

Time Commitment: Dependent on group times (estimate: 4 – 8 hours a month).

Training:  10 hours to include: confidentiality, victim issues, listening skills, group dynamics and Center services.

Court Watch Volunteer

Job Description: (1) gain information that staff can share with victims that didn’t contact the Center before the hearing, (2) collect information for victims the staff are working with, but can’t attend because of other commitments, (3) keep the Center staff updated on trends in the local courts.

Responsibilities: Attend Circuit Court hearings, take notes on processes, outcomes, and observations, deliver and debrief with the staff.

Qualifications: Legible handwriting, ability to sit and listen for 1 – 2 hours on wooden bench.

Time Commitment: Circuit Court has regularly scheduled hearings Monday, Tuesday and Thursday starting at 2 p.m. and lasting 1 – 2 hours. Volunteers can choose what days they want to attend. Debriefing would last a maximum of 30 minutes.

Training: 3 hours to include: confidentiality, brief overview of the criminal justice system, Center services, and victim issues.

Donations Volunteer

Job Description: Maintain donations received in donation area. These donations can make a tremendous difference for victims who have left their homes with only the clothes on their backs.

Responsibilities: (1) sort, arrange and store donations, (2) clean donation areas, (3) redistribute inappropriate donations, and (4) maintain a “needs list” of donation items.

Qualifications: Comfort sorting used clothing, desire to provide a respectful environment for victims.

Time Commitment: Flexible times during Center office hours, M – F, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.

Training: 2 hours to include: confidentiality, victim issues, and Center services.

Information Volunteer

Job Description: Increase availability of information for victims at safe locations; promote public education about the dynamics of victimization and options available in the   community

Responsibilities: (1) distribute and maintain brochures at sites in the community (2) contact and deliver information to businesses, offices and bulletin boards for special events, (3) track and record information about victim issues available at public and college libraries, (4) track dates and locations where information is displayed.

Qualifications: Reliable transportation, ability to approach business and library staff in a friendly, confident manner to request displaying information and discuss information disbursement options.

Time Commitment: Very flexible hours    during usual business, library, etc.

Training:  2 hours to include: confidentiality, victim issues, and Center services.

Yard & Building Maintenance Volunteer

Job Description: Maintain the appearance of the Center helping to create a respectful environment for all who use the Center as well as a place that facilitates a sense of well being.

Responsibilities: (1) weed & trim, (2) remove litter, (3) clean rain gutters, (4) clean siding, (5) change furnace filters, (6) sweep sidewalks, etc.

Qualifications: Able to do physical labor, work outdoors, interest or knowledge in plants is helpful.

Time Commitment: Very flexible, volunteer can arrange any schedule that suits their needs.

Training: 2 hours to include: confidentiality,   victim issues, and Center services.
